Kodi: what it is and how it works

What is Kodi

Kodi is a free and open source software, that performs the function of a media center, and is able to manage and organize video contents of any kind such as, streaming, music, images and much more. At the beginning his name was, XBMC (Xbox Media Center), and it was a program designed to turn the Xbox into a media center.

Over time, the XBMC developer team has enriched the original project, improving it with the addition of additional features, turning it into a multi-platform software, then also available for Android, Linux, Windows, MacOS etc.

Following the opening to all platforms, the XBMC team decided to change the XBMC name in Kodi, not modifying its initial characteristics. Therefore, thanks to its features (free and open source), a real community has formed, formed by both “simple” users and the various crew of developers providing the ADD-ONS with which it is possible to implement the functionalities of Kodi, customizing it to your liking.

Features and functionality

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the versatility of Kodi is due to ADD-ON, ie additional components developed by both the official team and third-party programmers. Those developed by those of third parties, give access to a range of services and features, are not integrated into the software.

With Kodi you can play videos, music and photos from local devices (hard disks, USB sticks etc.), from the local network (NAS, network hard disk, computers connected to the local network, etc.) and from the Internet; you can watch television programs via the Internet (IPTV); movies, TV series and any kind of on-demand streaming content; check PVR equipment for recording video content; view weather forecasts; download files from the Internet (even via P2P networks)

WARNING: some add-ons are illegal, because they give access to streaming services that do not comply with copyright laws.
